2005, listening to the news... ‘Malta ranked first with child obesity in the class rooms.’
13 years later…Chart shows the overweight and obesity rate among 15-year-old…2018 and trends since 2010. (The Heavy Burden of Obesity, 2019, OECD, Paris)

This statement offered an opportunity to discuss how we can be of service to society. Along, came the initiative of Outdoor Adventure Education with our motto:

'Get the children out of the classroom and into the great outdoors where learning happens naturally'

Kamaja - deriving from the first syllabi of the founding members; Kayleigh, Martin and Janice, started as family quality time together, while at the same time entertaining children...stretching them out of their comfort zone with activities held outside. Later on, Jean Pierre joined the team and facilitated the latest venture with programmes to adolescents as well.

Along the years, adventure education started to be appreciated and in 2010, Adventure Summer was launched. Adventure private functions started to be requested and hence, another important pillar of Kamaja Outdoors was structured. The last initiative was to offer camps during school holidays to assist working parents and help them with a fun, active place for their children.

Becoming a Teaching Institution

Adventure Education is the methodology where the learners experience a
‘Direct, active and a real consequences’ after their participation. Any activity offering these experiences fall under Adventure Education.

August 2014, Kamaja Outdoors was requested to build a specific programme for ALP students. The programme blended adventure education with academic subjects and was an immediate success with students who were not keen to pursuit the academic path.

The applied methodology in the ALP programmes revealed that all students wanted to be successful and challenged, head-on, the one-size-fit-all schooling system.
